Appworks has been developing digital platforms for media and sports organizations since 2013. Beyond our commercial work, we actively participate in European Union and nationally-funded research and innovation projects that push the boundaries of what's possible in digital engagement, AI technology, and interactive learning.
Our approach to grant projects
Three things have to be true before we join a consortium.
We want to be socially useful.
We've seen projects filled with reports, workshops, and the right words, but with little to show in the end. We join only when we believe something real can come out of it. A product, a tool, a change, something that can make an impact, even if it is a small personal change. If the work ends in a PDF no one reads, we'd rather not take part.
We want to push our limits of technology.
Each project helps us test what we know and learn what we don't. Sometimes we use things we've built before, but more often we try something new. We are builders, so we use each project to create and improve real things: AI, mobile apps, platforms, content tools…
It has to matter to us.
A project has to connect to something we care about: education, critical thinking, fairness and solidarity, the idea of a better society. Sometimes that sounds idealistic, even naïve. But if a project really speaks to us, it will be better prepared and better implemented.

DIGI-FRAME - AI-Powered Digital Skills Assessment Framework
An AI-powered framework and platform for assessing digital skills in lower secondary schools, built with 13 partners across six countries.
RomaRights
A multilingual AI assistant that helps Roma individuals and organisations report discrimination, generate complaint forms adapted to national law, and reach the equality bodies that can act on them. Developed with partners in six countries and released as open source.

Research & Development
Grant funding enables us to invest in long-term research and development of advanced technologies, particularly in AI, machine learning, and interactive platforms that enhance our core commercial offerings.
Cross-Border Collaboration
Working with partners from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and across Europe keeps us connected to the latest trends in digital transformation and exposes us to diverse challenges and innovative solutions.
Technology that outlives the project
What we build doesn’t get archived when the funding ends. MapApp is still running in 450+ schools. The transcription research went into Litteraworks, which is a commercial product. When we join a consortium, the technical deliverable is something that keeps working after the final report is filed.
We carry the reporting
Publicly funded work comes with administration: documentation, reporting cycles, audit trails. We’ve done it across Creative Europe, CERV, Erasmus+ and national programmes, and we don’t need a coordinator to chase us for it. One less partner to manage.
